Players would mass-combine Crucible weapons, selling any with meta-defining nodes such as:
"+2 to socketed support gems"
"Trigger socketed spell on kill"
"Totems summon with increased attack speed."
Risk vs. Reward
Combining trees was not without risk. Players could:
Lose access to key nodes if the tree path is truncated.
End up with poor layouts that require inefficient points to POE currency for sale reach.
Waste valuable base items with failed merges.
